Bookmaker margin comparison (June 2026)
The table below summarises our latest measurements. Football margin is the average overround we recorded on top-flight 1X2 match odds; payout is the share of total stakes a balanced book would return to bettors at those prices. A two-point margin difference sounds small — over hundreds of bets it is the difference between a winning and a losing year.

| 2 | Stake | 4.0% | 96.2% | Crypto + fiat on-ramp | Best crypto odds |
| 3 | Cloudbet | 4.3% | 95.9% | Crypto (BTC, ETH + 40 coins) | High crypto limits |

How we rank: the evidence, not the advertising
Every ranking on OddsDetective starts with a spreadsheet, not a sales pitch. Each month we snapshot odds for the same set of fixtures — over 200 matches across the Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and, right now, the 2026 World Cup — at every bookmaker in our case file, all within the same hour to keep prices comparable.
For every match we convert the quoted 1X2 odds into implied probabilities and add them up. The amount by which that sum exceeds 100% is the bookmaker's margin on that market. We average those margins per book, then weight the final score: 60% odds quality (average margin), 20% market depth (sports, leagues and bet types covered) and 20% reliability (limits, settlement speed and payment record).
Affiliate deals never touch the maths. Some links on this site earn us a commission, but Pinnacle sits at #1 because it measurably charges the least — the same reason it has been the sharp bettor's reference price for two decades.
What is a bookmaker margin (overround)?
A bookmaker's margin — also called the overround, vig or juice — is the commission built into the odds themselves. Convert every outcome of a market into implied probability (1 divided by the decimal odds) and the total will come to more than 100%. The excess is the margin.
margin = (1/oddshome + 1/oddsdraw + 1/oddsaway − 1) × 100
Example: 1/2.10 + 1/3.50 + 1/3.65 = 1.036 → margin ≈ 3.6%
A fair coin toss is a 2.00/2.00 market. A soft bookmaker quotes it at 1.91/1.91 (4.7% margin); Pinnacle-style pricing offers 1.97/1.97 (1.5%). You are buying the same bet — one shop simply charges three times more for it. Our margin calculator does this arithmetic for any market, and the odds comparison guide shows how to act on it.
Why odds quality beats any welcome bonus
Bonuses are loud; margins are quiet. That is exactly why bookmakers advertise the first and bury the second. Run the numbers on a typical recreational year — 1,000 flat bets of $20, or $20,000 in turnover:
- At a 6.6% margin book, the structural cost baked into your prices is roughly $1,240 a year.
- At Pinnacle's 2.4%, the same betting costs about $470 — a saving of around $770, every single year.
A one-off $200 welcome bonus with rollover conditions does not come close to covering that gap, which is why our ranking weighs measured margins, not promotional noise. Bonuses can still be worth taking — just never at the cost of betting at bad prices afterwards.
Crypto vs fiat sportsbooks: two sides of the same ledger
Our list deliberately mixes both. Crypto books such as Stake, Cloudbet, Thunderpick, BC.Game and Duel settle withdrawals in minutes, accept bettors from more countries, and — at the sharp end — now run margins that embarrass many retail brands. Fiat books such as Bet365 and Betano counter with local licences, regulated dispute resolution, easier deposits from a bank account and deeper live-betting products.
Many experienced bettors simply keep both: a fiat account for live betting and consumer protection, a crypto account for fast settlement, and Pinnacle as the price benchmark against which every other quote is judged. Whichever side you favour, the test is identical — measure the margin before you deposit.
