Bookmaker margin & overround calculator — measure the vig in seconds
The margin (overround) is the commission hidden inside every set of odds. Pick 2-way or 3-way mode, paste any market into the calculator below and see exactly what the bookmaker is charging — then compare it with the books we measure every month.
Pick the 3-way tab for 1X2 markets or the 2-way tab for handicaps and totals, enter the decimal odds, and this overround calculator returns the margin instantly: implied probabilities (1 ÷ odds) summed, minus 100%. Under 3% on football match odds is sharp; 5–7% is retail standard.
Use decimal odds. 3-way mode is for 1X2 match results; 2-way mode is for Asian handicaps, over/unders, tennis and any other market with exactly two outcomes.
How to calculate bookmaker margin by hand
Three steps, no algebra beyond division:
- Convert each price to implied probability. Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds. For a market of 2.10 / 3.50 / 3.65: 0.476, 0.286 and 0.274.
- Add them up. 0.476 + 0.286 + 0.274 = 1.036, i.e. 103.6%.
- Subtract 100%. The remainder — 3.6% — is the bookmaker's margin on this market. A fair market would sum to exactly 100%.
payout rate = 100 / (implied total) → 100/1.036 ≈ 96.5%
The calculator also shows fair odds — the prices the market would offer with the margin stripped out (each price multiplied by the implied total). That is the honest quote you are negotiating against, and the basis for the no-vig probabilities used in the line shopping guide.
What is a good margin? Benchmark against the market
Numbers mean little without context, so grade your result against our June 2026 comparison of published odds — the same data behind the main ranking:
| # | Bookmaker | Football margin | Payout | Funding | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pinnacle | 2.4% | 97.7% | Fiat + crypto | Best overall odds |
| 2 | Stake | 4.0% | 96.2% | Crypto + fiat on-ramp | Best crypto odds |
| 3 | Cloudbet | 4.3% | 95.9% | Crypto (BTC, ETH + 40 coins) | High crypto limits |
| 4 | Bet365 | 5.2% | 95.1% | Fiat (cards, bank, e-wallets) | Market depth & live |
| 5 | Betano | 5.6% | 94.7% | Fiat (cards, bank, local methods) | World Cup specials |
| 6 | 22Bet | 5.9% | 94.4% | Fiat + crypto | Market variety |
| 7 | Thunderpick | 6.3% | 94.1% | Crypto (BTC, ETH, USDT, LTC) | Esports + sports |
| 8 | BC.Game | 6.6% | 93.8% | Crypto (150+ coins) | Altcoin bettors |
| 9 | Duel | 6.9% | 93.6% | Crypto (BTC, ETH, USDT) | High rollers |
Rules of thumb for top-flight football match odds: under 3% is sharp, 3–4.5% is the best of the crypto field, 5–6% is ordinary retail pricing, and above 7% means you are paying a premium that line shopping would eliminate. Outright and specials markets run far higher — our World Cup 2026 file found 14–35% on the winner market based on published odds.
Margin vs payout rate — two views of the same number
Some sites quote a bookmaker's payout rate (e.g. 96.5%) instead of a margin (3.6%). They are the same fact: payout = 100 ÷ implied total. A 2.4% margin equals a 97.7% payout; a 6.9% margin equals 93.6%. Margins make the cost visible — payout rates make it sound generous, which is why marketing departments prefer them.
Whichever framing you use, remember the cost applies to turnover, not bankroll: a $25-per-bet player making 20 bets a week puts about $26,000 a season through the books, so each percentage point of margin is worth roughly $260 a year. Moving from a 6% book to a 3% one is a bigger upgrade than any welcome bonus — the full math lives on the lowest margin bookmakers page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a bookmaker's margin?
Convert every outcome's decimal odds to implied probability (1 ÷ odds) and add them together. The amount the total exceeds 100% is the margin. Example: 2.10 / 3.50 / 3.65 gives 47.6% + 28.6% + 27.4% = 103.6% — a 3.6% margin. The calculator above automates it.
What is the difference between margin, overround, vig and juice?
Different names for the same thing: the commission a bookmaker builds into its prices. 'Overround' usually refers to the implied total (e.g. 103.6%), while margin, vig and juice describe the excess over 100% (3.6%). Our tool reports both, plus the equivalent payout rate.
What is a normal bookmaker margin on football?
Based on our June 2026 comparison of published top-flight match odds: Pinnacle 2.4%, Stake 4.0%, Cloudbet 4.3%, Bet365 5.2%, Betano 5.6%, 22Bet 5.9%, Thunderpick 6.3%, BC.Game 6.6%, Duel 6.9%. Smaller leagues run 1–2 points higher; outright markets reach 15–40%.
Why are fair odds higher than the odds I was offered?
Because fair odds show the market with the margin removed — each quoted price multiplied by the implied total. If you were offered 2.10 in a market with a 3.6% margin, the fair price is about 2.18. The gap between the two is precisely what the bookmaker charges for the bet.
